The wooden spoons, tongs, microplanes, peppermills, and salt cellars that quietly do most of the work in a kitchen. The small tools that get used on every recipe and that are worth getting right once. Most are under 20 dollars. A few (the microplane, the OXO peeler) are weirdly cheap for how much work they do. The picks lean toward the ones I have replaced after the first version wore out, because those tend to be the ones that earn the second purchase. Here is the working short list.
